On set with Station 19: The look of the lounge
One of the things that CarterMatt found the most joy in when it comes to visiting the Station 19 set was seeing the overall design of the firehouse itself. Given that the series hasn’t aired just yet it’s still a little bit difficult to know how these characters are going to interact; yet, you can get a sense of the environment that is around them and how that, in turn, informs who they are.
The lounge was one of the cozier rooms and it was one that felt like a great place for firefighters to relax. There were books, games, and even a Foosball table for some of the firefighters to unwind with. There was also a ton of photographs and memorabilia, including a Seattle Mariners pennant and also a Russell Wilson jersey on the wall. We snapped a couple of photos via Instagram, which you can see at the bottom of this article.
So have some of the actors learned more about themselves through the items in this lounge? At the time in which we were on set it didn’t seem like it, but there are reasons for almost every element in that lounge being there that could be explored more in the future. Here’s what actor Okieriete Onaodowan (Dean) had to say to CarterMatt on the subject:
“The production team put a lot of effort into everything you see here — it’s been perfectly placed with the cast in mind and the characters in mind. Each of the things [in the lounge] has an attachment to a character. That’s a lot of attention to detail. Nothing is arbitrary in this room … It’s more than dressing.”
Out of the rooms of the fictional firehouse we visited this was probably our favorite, if for no other reason than that this is where the firefighters can start to let loose a little bit. Yet, it makes sense that they wouldn’t regularly spend too much time in the room given that this is not a show where characters get opportunities to relax all that much. This is a place where there is constantly going to be varying degrees of action and peril — the whole point of the show is that there is constantly something going on.
Remember, Station 19 premieres on ABC come Thursday, March 22 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern, following the latest episode of Grey’s Anatomy.
