Outlander stars chime in on photo-spoiler conversation, and it brings us back to original point

Watch the Outlander season 3 premiere

What exactly constitutes a spoiler? With many shows that’s a pretty black-and-white thing to figure out. With Outlanderhowever, it’s a little more complicated. A large percentage of the show’s fans are familiar with the books already, and they relish the opportunity to see and hear about some of their favorite scenes being filmed. Yet, there is also a contingent of people who are out there who either have never read the books or want to wait until the show premieres to see some of the costumes and sets.

We’re of somewhat two minds about the subject personally. If fans are just excited and taking pictures of the cast and posting it online, that’s fun and an excitement of fan passion. Yet, we also understand that someone can casually go onto Twitter and just because of something that someone they follow retweets, they can have something important spoiled for them in the blink of an eye. What’s why it’s touchy, and it brings us back to something that we wrote earlier this year: We wish there was a way that Twitter users could choose to mark their own content as a spoiler so that users could choose as to whether or not to see it — think along the lines of what internet comment threads do.

Anyhow, what Sam Heughan said on this subject recently to Entertainment Weekly tackles the subject with similar diplomacy:

“I feel it spoils the surprise a little bit, but I know why! … We all want to see, and we would love to be able to post more stuff as well. We’re always being told off for doing things. People are so supportive, but I wish there was some way of having photos without it being a spoiler. It is what it is, and it’s great that people are at least that excited that they want to take photos.”

Meanwhile, Caitriona Balfe took a slightly different approach:

“In the UK, you have a right to walk, so people are allowed to be around, and you know, I think it’s up to people individually if they want to look for spoilers or not … It’s fun! I remember going to film sets when I was a kid and they were filming in the neighboring town and it’s so exciting to be able to see behind the curtain. It’s fun. It’s entertainment what we’re doing, so let the people be entertained!”

With the way in which the internet is set up right now, the best thing that any Outlander fan who doesn’t want spoilers can really do right now is really simple: Just be careful of where you go and what sites you read. Use your own discretion. Don’t follow accounts that may post spoiler photos — if you do, mute them during filming.  You may still be spoiled but that’s about as good as you can do without getting off social media whatsoever.
