American Horror Story season 8: Kathy Bates returning

Kathy Bates

Even though her Netflix show Disjointed may be over, Kathy Bates already has another TV home on American Horror Story season 8.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, show executive producer Ryan Murphy confirmed the news by explaining that she, alongside Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters (already confirmed to be coming back), will lead the story coming up:

“Kathy and Sarah Paulson have a lot of great stuff to get to do … So, with Evan Peters, the three of them are the leads this year.”

Bates first appeared on the FX anthology series back during the third season Coven, and went on to appear in the three that came after it. This marks her return to the franchise and the great thing that comes with that is that Murphy is almost sure to create a role for her that is different from anything else that she’s done in her career. So far within this series she’s done everything from play a bearded lady to a Hollywood actress who becomes so obsessed with her character in Roanoke that she eventually adopts some of her tendencies. She’s a brilliant actress and she brings a lot to the franchise that it doesn’t always have when she is not around.

Now, what American Horror Story needs to do is go back to its roots and tell a simple story that is about a few characters and some of the terrible things that happen around them. That was the magic of the first season and some of Roanoke, but over the years many of the other seasons became bloated and amok with too many things going on. Cult last year definitely had its moments, but it was almost too politically-charged and it was hard for the show to really one-up some of the craziness that was happening in the real world. Sometimes, escapism really is best.
