Supergirl season 3 episode 14 video: Is Winn Schott’s mother evil?
Let’s start, though, with the news that Winn Schott’s father is apparently dead. The villain, (otherwise known as Toyman) died while behind bars. This in turn leads to a burial, but then also an exploding coffin. Also, it leads to the arrival of Winn’s mother (Laurie Metcalf).
Why is she there all of a sudden? She claims to her son that she was told for the longest time that if she came near him that bad things would happen — this was all coming from his father. That’s an emotional story, but Winn’s history as a whole is extremely heartbreaking since it doesn’t seem like he has anything constituting an ordinary family. Also, there’s a good chance that his mother may be just as crazy as Winn’s father was. The final seconds of the promo feature her seemingly saying “that’s a dangerous toy” in a voice that sounds rather sinister — more than that, it seems as though Kara is suffering in the midst of some sort of trap.
What is rather interesting about this episode on paper is despite all of the hype and buildup for this episode when it comes to Reign, it is actually a different villain taking center stage for now. We don’t necessarily mind that though, mostly because of the fact that you’re getting a fantastic guest star in Metcalf. She’s obviously got a great TV resume thanks to Roseanne and playing Sheldon Cooper’s mother on The Big Bang Theory, but she also was recently nominated for an Oscar for Lady Bird. Just in case you’re wondering how Supergirl landed an actor of her caliber in the first place, it’s mostly because her youngest daughter is a huge fan of the show and its star Melissa Benoist.

Consider this episode a small diversion from everything else so far this season — if you love the Reign story, rest assured that you’re getting plenty more of her this season. She may just be off preparing Purity for battle.
