Saturday Night Live cold open: John Goodman returns as Rex Tillerson
The moment that we saw that the cold open was Anderson Cooper 360, we knew that this was going to be more or less a showcase for some other impressions. This included Kate McKinnon playing Jeff Sessions, who had to bemoan taking away the pension from a “Christian white.” (This was a reference to Andrew McCabe.) Sessions also joked a little bit about his own potential future.
Then, we got another cameo, as there was an appearance by John Goodman as Rex Tillerson — his first in a while. This remains a fun impression, but the real problem is that when it comes to Tillerson there really isn’t all that much to spoof with him. He was rarely in the public eye! Goodman really had to make most of it up, including saying “The Rexy is loose” while acting like a dinosaur.
Where things got super-crazy was when Fred Armisen came out as Michael Wolff. He presented some more “details” about life at the White House alongside the return of Bill Hader as The Mooch. He last played this character during Weekend Update Summer Edition, and this was just as funny a bit as it was the first time. (There’s a lot more to obviously spoof about Scaramucci in the short period of time in which we saw him in the public eye.)
There was a lot of funny in this cold open, even if it was super-reliant on cameos and didn’t really give any of the current cast anything to do at all.
