The Flash season 4 spoilers: Will Harry Wells become a villain in his own right?

Harry Wells

We know from the start of The Flash that Tom Cavanagh excels at playing dark characters — Harrison Wells, or at least Harrison Wells from Earth-1 inhabited by the Reverse Flash Eobard Thawne, was one of the best characters that the CW series has presented to date. Since that time, though, Cavanagh’s roles have become a little bit lighter. Take, for example, the egocentric but still heartfelt Harry on season 2, or the bumbling writer H.R. on season 3 who eventually found his purpose in the battle against Savitar.

If there is one common thread among many of the Wells in the universe, it’s that many of them have a tendency to die … and there’s now reason to worry about Harry. As a means to be better able to tackle The Thinker Harry has come up with his own version of his thinking cap, a way in which to amplify his own intelligence so that Team Flash has their own version of this character with similar powers. It’s a great idea in theory, but we’ve seen already just how some of these powers ended up corrupting Clifford DeVoe. With that in mind, it’s certainly possible that the same could happen here. While this power has given Harry a greater purpose, it could also cost him great pain. This is something that executive producer Todd Helbing hinted at recently to The Hollywood Reporter:

“[Harry] has been struggling all season with trying to out-think somebody that’s smarter than him; it’s driving him nuts. It’s a slippery slope of what he’s willing to do to be better than this guy. It’s going to have a disastrous outcome.”

Note that “disastrous outcome” does not necessarily mean Harry becoming evil, but it could mean causing some harm to him in a different form. It also raises a question as to whether or not there could be another iteration of Wells brought in for a potential fifth season of The Flash if something happens to this one. There are some major challenges that obviously come with introducing new versions of this character since some of them don’t have the same investment and backstory that the original Harry does. Nonetheless, there is something still fun about getting to meet some different iterations of this man over time.
