Britannia renewed for season 2 by Sky Atlantic

Brittania season 2

For everyone out there who loved Britannia on Sky Atlantic, Amazon, HBO, or anywhere else that you loved watching the series all over the globe, CarterMatt comes bearing some great news: A second season for the series has been officially picked up!

This series is coming back for more after being one of the biggest original series launches to date by Sky Atlantic and we do think that it satisfies a need for something that isn’t really out there all that much in the market right now: An interesting, thought-provoking drama featuring some great characters and a period of history that has not been explored all that much by some other series that are out there.

In a statement today confirming this news, Cameron Roach, commissioning editor for drama at Sky, had the following to say:

“Drama on Sky is about the unexpected, the visceral and the memorable, it’s about stories told in a way you won’t find anywhere else. That’s why we are delighted to be working with [writer] Jez [Butterworth] and the production team on the next instalment.”

Britannia season 2 is going to begin filming soon, with the premiere set for at some point in 2019. This is a show that needed to be renewed soon in the event that it wanted to keep its pattern of airing episodes reasonably similar.

Beyond just its story, one of the things that Britannia does have going for it more than anything else is a super-smart programming strategy. In being sold to so many different territories all over the world it can recoup some of its cost and build a big audience right out of the gate. In America in particular the series gives Amazon something that they have been coveting for a rather long span of time now: Some sort of epic series that gives them an opportunity to deliver to viewers a striking, visual experience.
