Why Martin Freeman isn’t too eager to do Sherlock season 5
Speaking in a new interview with the Daily Telegraph, the actor explains that rampant fan expectations and pressure have led to his feelings towards being on the show being somewhat tainted from what they once were:
“To be absolutely honest, it [was] kind of impossible … Sherlock became the animal that it became immediately. Whereas even with [the U.K. version of] The Office, it was a slow burn. But Sherlock was frankly notably high quality from the outset. And when you start [that high] it’s pretty hard to maintain that.
“Being in that show, it is a mini-Beatles thing. People’s expectations, some of it’s not fun anymore. It’s not a thing to be enjoyed, it’s a thing of: ‘You better f—ing do this, otherwise, you’re a c—.’ That’s not fun anymore.”
While we obviously want more Sherlock as soon as possible, CarterMatt does understand where Freeman is coming from. For starters, there was almost an eagerness to tear Sherlock season 4 down by some critics — they had already made such a great television show already that there wasn’t really anywhere to go but down. While the fans for this show are super-passionate, we also imagine that at a certain point the attention could be overwhelming. Freeman is not someone who, outside of his work, has ever really sought out attention in the spotlight. This could explain further why he finds the notion of being a part of this super-popular show a little bit more trying. This is a man who starred in three The Hobbit movies and is in Black Panther — yet, neither of those franchises have created anywhere near the same buzz around him as Sherlock has.

Our feeling is that maybe come 2020 or 2021, the eagerness to do more Sherlock could come back and everyone will start to find the time in the schedule in order to do it again. That’s at least our hope for now, since we don’t want to lose the series forever.
