How to Get Away with Murder season 5 to have different tone

Is there a How to Get Away with Murder season 5 officially over at ABC? Unfortunately for the time being the answer to that is no. Yet, at present it does seem as though the Viola Davis series is charting that way — even though the ratings are not fantastic it is faring better than every single 10:00 p.m. show on the network other than The Good Doctor. Beyond just that, it also has an Oscar winner leading the way as a mart of the cast. ABC would have to be out of their mind to turn up their noses at that and it’s pretty clear that this is not something that they want to do.

With this in mind, How to Get Away with Murder showrunner Pete Nowalk is making it clear that he is moving forward as though there will be a season 5, even if that’s not confirmed as of yet. He basically admitted as such to Deadline while at a screening event for the finale. He also made it clear that the fifth season would be a “different tone, and it’s something that we’ve set up.” While this is still a drama, there will be lighter, funnier moments in the upcoming season.

Not only that, but it also sounds as though Connor and Oliver’s wedding will be a focal point. Yet, it’s not going to be the same sort of wedding:

“I will say I personally kind of hate weddings … and I hate the trope of it, so we’re going to do it in our own fun way.”

Hopefully, much of what Nowalk says here turns out to be true and we end up getting a chance to have a season 5 for the ages. After all, this is a show that has a ton of positive qualities to it but it does need to keep reinventing itself. It can’t just keep doing the same stuff that it has every year. If it does, viewers will feel like everything is starting to bleed together.
