Fox optimistic on Gotham season 5 renewal odds
While speaking at the INTV conference recently, Fox’s programming boss Gary Newman said (per Deadline) that there is a lot of positive energy surrounding the Batman prequel, which continues to deliver creatively even though the ratings are not anywhere near what they once were. The biggest issue, per him, is figuring out the right spot for it given that Thursday nights are going to be used for NFL football this fall:
We asked a lot of it this year moving to Thursday nights and I thought it did a pretty good job of opening up that night for us. I feel like Gotham should have a place in our schedule … [Its future could] purely be a matter of scheduling. Thursday is not available in the fall, so where do we use it? Hopefully there’s more years of Gotham.”
Personally, we would not be altogether shocked if the Gotham episode order is cut slightly to around 18 episodes or so, and the series premieres in January and then runs from there through the end of the season with few breaks in between. The only other option would be moving the series to a weaker night in Fridays (which would not be ideal for the show’s future) or bumping something else on the schedule. Fox isn’t moving anything on Wednesdays with Empire and STAR being so strong and it’s possible as it is that another show on the schedule could be bumped for 9-1-1, which to date is the biggest scripted hit for Fox this year. The network also has The Gifted already renewed for a second season. The fate of Lucifer is not clear as of yet, but given that we love that show just about as much as we love Gotham we don’t want to be in a position where we have to root for one show over the other.
