Timeless season 2 episode 2 preview: Wendell Scott and ‘The Darlington 500’

After spending tonight’s premiere episode in World War I, where the team ended up in turn meeting Nicholas Keynes, Timeless season 2 episode 2 is going to move the time-travel forward to the 1950’s. While there, the series will spend a little bit more time exploring a fascinating part of history in the earlier days of NASCAR. A part of what makes this show so much fun is seeing them take on eras and people who often get overlooked in the history books. Wendell Scott is one of those people. He helped to break barriers in auto racing; while there are still diversity issues aplenty in NASCAR today, they could be so much worse had he not worked to blaze a trail as the first black driver.

Below, the Timeless season 2 episode 2 gives you a little more of a sense as to how the overall story is going to unfold:

03/18/2018 (10:00PM – 11:00PM) (Sunday) : The Time Team chases Rittenhouse to a stock car race in the 1950s where Wyatt (Matt Lanter) learns that his favorite race car driver is actually a Rittenhouse sleeper agent on a mission to destroy the American car industry. To stop the Rittenhouse plan, Wyatt, Lucy (Abigail Spencer) and Rufus (Malcolm Barrett) team up with Wendell Scott (guest star Joseph Lee Anderson), the first African-American NASCAR driver.

The presence of Rittenhouse sleeper agents will probably be a recurring theme throughout the season, as the team discovers through their travels that there were people hiding in plain sight who were secretly operating as a means to get more information for the mystery organization. We imagine that for the writers, changing history is one of the most difficult parts of crafting these stories. You don’t want to make any living heroes or estates of heroes upset by implying that they may have secretly been a part of some sort of evil organization meant to manipulate time — even if this show is pure fiction and designed for entertainment first.

The show does follow often some sort of form — the Time Team works with a forgotten hero of history (in this case Wendell Scott) and then does everything that they can in order to make the world a better place. We’ll see precisely what unfolds over the course of this particular installment as we learn more information about Keynes’ plan to change history and use that to conquer the world.
