Saturday Night Live – Sterling K. Brown ratings lowest of season

Saturday Night Live - Sterling K. Brown ratings

Here is something that we absolutely consider to be a surprise: Even though Saturday Night Live aired a great episode this weekend featuring Sterling K. Brown as a host, it really didn’t do that good of a job moving the needle in the ratings.

As a matter of fact, the series ended up drawing its lowest ratings of the season with a 1.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic. What’s the reason for that? You can look to a number of different things, but we ultimately feel as though it’s twofold:

1. The host – As fantastic as Brown was (read our full review here, or watch the video of him below), he is still not necessarily a mainstream name with much of America. He’s one of the biggest stars on network TV but network TV itself is so much more fragmented than it has been in the past. Compare Sterling to Charles Barkley, a sports star who has been well-known for decades throughout the entire NBA community.

2. The timing – The more we get into the spring and the more the ratings go down. That’s just the way of things most of the time with SNL. Viewers have been cooped up in their houses for a long period of time and may use now more of their Saturday nights in order to go outside and have a good time.

One thing that we don’t think is playing much of a role, no matter what you’re hearing on the internet right now, is the claim that SNL is losing viewers because it’s too political. It’s not as though the show suddenly got political the last month or so! We’re not sure that the series has had many conservatives watching in well over a year now, and with that in mind many of the claims of people “not watching” all of a sudden come across as hollow. These are the same sort of ratings trends that happen every year; if the numbers keep sinking over the next few weeks, there may be something more to worry about them.

Why do you think that the ratings are going down for SNL? Be sure to share right now in the comments!
