Call the Midwife season 8: Will Helen George return?
Through much of the season 7 finale, we were almost looking over every shoulder anticipating getting a chance to see George turn up as the character, similar to how Patsy turned up briefly at the end of season 6, only for it to not happen. What was the reason for that, and why didn’t we have a chance to see someone who is at this point one of the show’s longest-tenured characters?
As many of the series’ longtime viewers know, though, there is a pretty simple and understandable reason for the character’s absence — Helen George’s own real-life maternity leave. She and Jack Ashton (who plays Tom) welcomed their own baby last fall and she had the final few episodes of the season off. She did make a cameo via some old footage in the reel at the end of the finale, as did Miranda Hart (who played Chummy on the series for many years).
Based on most interviews that are out there at the moment it does appear as though George is going to return as Trixie for Call the Midwife season 8, but at the same time filming has not officially begun yet. The simple reason to suspect she will be returning is simply because this is what the writing seemed to suggest — her time outside of Britain to improve herself was meant to be only temporary, and she could have some opportunities moving forward to get herself within a slightly better place once more.

Hopefully in general there are no more cast changes moving into season 8, largely because there have been so many as it is and we really don’t need to see too much more turmoil. Also, we love the group as presently assembled!
