Netflix stands by Stranger Things creators after verbal abuse allegations

Stranger Things 2

It looks as though Netflix is standing by Stranger Things creators Ross and Matt Duffer in the wake of some recent allegations levied against them.

Earlier this week, camera grip Peyton Brown accused the Duffer Brothers of being verbally abusive on the show’s season 2 set, and added that the abuse eventually went so far that she had no interest returning for an additional season. It was the latest in a line of accusations against showrunners and executive producers over the past several months, which has in turn led to many firings by networks and studios.

In a statement now (per Entertainment Weekly), a rep for Netflix had the following to say about this particular allegation, while also making their support for the Duffers clear:

“We looked into the concern that was raised when we heard of the allegation on Thursday, and found no wrongdoing … Maintaining a safe, respectful atmosphere on set is important to us, and we know it is to the Duffer Brothers as well.”

This is not the first time that Stranger Things has endured some negative headlines. Late last year, the Duffer Brothers waded through a different sort of controversy over an unscripted kiss between young actors Sadie Sink and Caleb McLaughlin, one that made the former feel uncomfortable at the time of it being filmed. This led to questions as to whether or not the young actors felt unfairly pressured to do something that they were not prepared for.

The third season of Stranger Things is set to film later this year, with the premiere date likely set for at some point in 2019. This is likely not the end of the controversy even if it is the end of the allegations. At some point, we would imagine that the Duffers will need to address the matter personally as this is the sort of story that may not completely go away until they do. We will absolutely have some additional updates on this subject as they start to become available.
