Call the Midwife season 7 finale video: The heartbreaking goodbye
(Warning: There are spoilers ahead! If you are reading and have not seen season 7, stop now.)
At the end of this past episode of the series, we were forced to say farewell to one of the series’ most-beloved characters in Barbara. She died in the closing minutes of that installment and now, the farewell lingers into the funeral. Characters like her husband Tom, her friends and colleagues, and people she looked up to all have to collectively say farewell. This isn’t the first time in which Call the Midwife has chosen to kill off a character; yet, this is the first time that they have done so with a midwife who still had almost her entire life ahead of her. This is a difficult death to digest just because of the way in which it happened and also the fact that there was so little of Barbara this season in the first place.

If there is a message that does pervade most of Call the Midwife, though, it is one of persistence and perseverance. That is what we think will shine through with this series, by and large, as we inch closer to the very end. There are going to be people who struggle through what happened to Barbara, and that makes sense given that the characters are all struggling with it. Yet, the other lives on the series are not ending. There are still many other narratives to follow and, more than likely, there will be probably a new arrival in midwife form either in the Christmas Special or next season. Call the Midwife is used to cast turnover and Barbara wasn’t even there at the beginning. These moments of pain, like many other emotions associated with the show, shall pass. The season 7 finale shall allow for some of the moments of mourning.
