Why did someone die on Call the Midwife season 7 episode 7?

Call the Midwife season 7

Why is Charlotte Ritchie leaving Call the Midwife? At the moment, it is clear that the actress is leaving the BBC series — with that being said, though, there may be people wanting more information … including why in the world this particular decision was made.

For those who were wondering, this decision had nothing to do with anything other than what Ritchie herself wanted. She chose to depart, and she made that clear in a new interview with the Radio Times:

“It seemed like a good time to go … They ask you to commit quite early on in the year to the show. And I always wanted to do it, but I also felt that I’d done three different series for the last five years, and thought it might be good to slightly try and branch out and try something new.

“I just didn’t want to get too comfy. I just think it keeps it fresh and keeps it alive if I keep going.”

As for why Barbara was straight up killed-off as opposed to written off in some other way, much of that may have been about closure:

“It would have been amazing to have the door always open, but also you can’t always do that … You can’t have your cake and eat it. It was my decision to go and I think it feels right that I really, properly shut the door.”

Another reason to end Barbara’s story this way may just have to do with the fact that Jack Ashton, who plays Tom on the series, is potentially going to stick around and you cannot have him without Barbara if the two characters are to stay married. There was a way in which to write the characters out for a while at the conclusion of the Christmas Special; yet, they returned briefly before this shocking move first started to take shape last week. The character is now gone in what has to be the most devastating move in the history of Call the Midwife to date?
