Why a Love season 4 isn’t happening at Netflix

Following the launch of season 3 today, it makes sense to wonder whether or not there will be a Love season 4. Unfortunately, it’s just not happening, and the simple explanation for that is that it all comes back to a creative decision by Paul Rust and the show’s other creators in Lesley Arfin and Judd Apatow. The three got together with Netflix, and after that point all parties decided that the best thing that they could do was start to move forward.

n a new interview with Decider, here is what Rust had to say about making that choice:

“The three of us along with talking to Netflix, we all decided you know what? This feels like a really good and appropriate time to wrap up the show. We feel like we’ve said what we wanted to about these characters, and I think we just didn’t want to end it where we’re in a position like, ‘Oh, the tank’s been dry for a couple seasons now.’ We have really amazing and supportive collaborators throughout the three seasons, and it was nice to be able to have the freedom to be having conversations like that with them as opposed to having somebody else decide for you after you’ve completed the season.”

So, whatever happens during the third season (it feels wrong to really dive in and spoil that here), that’s going to be it for the show and that’s okay. Think about some of the best British comedies of all time, whether it be The Office or Fawlty Towers, and you will realize that they ended their run so much earlier than many people out there probably wanted them to. Yet, there are some clear benefits of doing that, most notably that you are ending your show before the perceptions start to creep in that you are somehow irrelevant and not exciting anymore. The only memories that are being left are fond memories, and that is absolutely something that some other shows out there need to take something from.
