Everyone start your celebrations: The Good Doctor is officially returning for a second season on ABC. This news was first confirmed in an Instagram Story by the series itself and it makes us think that there will be an official announcement at some point in the near future.
In many ways, a season 2 renewal for this show has been a foregone conclusion for a while now. The ratings have been outstanding from the very beginning, and this was really a matter of when, rather than if, ABC was going to make the move to renew the show. It has critical acclaim and it also has an extremely bankable star in Freddie Highmore, who came on to this show immediately following his run on Bates Motel. This news also comes just a few episodes before the season finale comes on the air. This ensures that if there is a cliffhanger at the end of the season, you can rest assured that there will be more coming down the line.
How long can a series like The Good Doctor really last? In theory, CarterMatt feels that there’s no reason this show couldn’t go on for many more years. It has enough of a procedural component that there will always be new stories to tell, and it really comes down to a combination of the ratings and whether or not the creative team continues to want to telling more of this story. For now, we know that The Good Doctor continues to deliver time and time again — it’s early in the run but it’s also inspired some confidence. It is emotional at the same time funny, interesting, and also very relevant. It takes an unflinching look at issues other shows may shy away from out of fear of strong reactions.
