Oscars 2018: Did Faye Dunaway, Warren Beatty get it right this time?
At the end of the 2018 Oscars, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty took the stage in order to present Best Picture. With that, there were of course jokes aplenty as to whether or not the accounting firm behind the awards would actually get it right this year.
As it turns out, they did! There was no big drama surrounding the end of the show this year, beyond of course whether or not we would see someone get the jet ski that was hyped up by Jimmy Kimmel all night for the person with the shortest overall speech. The Shape of Water won Best Picture and that was it. No real drama or anything else. That’s fine in the end.
As for the Oscars themselves, they were a sometimes-entertaining show but one also riddled with contradictions. While the series itself may still be doing what it can to move forward and showcase a new message of inclusion of support, the end result of the ceremony tonight proved yet again that there is still a little bit of work to be done from the voter point of view. There are at least two controversial winners tonight with a history of going against the Time’s Up message, and there still isn’t the right amount of representation in several categories. While there are issues in the world that take time, we can’t just pretend as though there aren’t just some stains left that keep the Oscars from being what they could be.
Also, it does feel as though now is the right time to get a new host for the Oscars. Kimmel is fine, but he doesn’t seem to know how to end the show and the awards benefit often from having a different voice leading the proceedings. (Can we make Tiffany Haddish the host next year? What about Kumail Nanjiani? Both proved they were worthy tonight.)
