Will E!’s Oscars red carpet with Ryan Seacrest be tape-delayed?

Is it possible that E!’s coverage of the Oscars is going to be treated a little bit different than usual? Signs seem to be pointing towards that at the moment.

While the red carpet shows often do face some sort of live delay of a few seconds and some interviews are pre-taped for the sake of time, a report from Deadline claims that the network is looking at doing a delay of up to 30 seconds in the event that things unfold unexpectedly in interviews featuring celebrities and the red-carpet host Ryan Seacrest. This past week saw a sexual misconduct allegation against Seacrest resurface from a former E! stylist. Seacrest strongly denied the allegations and an internal investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing; many within the Hollywood community have suggested either skipping interviews with the network or using that screen time in order to state a message. Seacrest hosts the show with Giuliana Rancic, but the two conduct their interviews separately at different places on the red carpet.

In a statement, here is what a source had to say to the aforementioned publication:

“The plan being considered is to mainly ensure plenty of time to either cut to Giuliana or to pull the plug altogether unnoticed if an on-camera encounter with Ryan goes into tricky territory.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the network described their plans as “business as usual … As always, we tape multiple sources of content simultaneously to deliver the best possible show, and there are often brief delays between interviews.”

Regardless, the E! show today is going to be a little more unusual than it’s been in the past. Even if the subject isn’t really broached on air, it’s going to be very hard for it to be avoided. Just look at how Debra Messing used the platform in the past to blast the network for what they chose to do with Catt Sadler.
