Saturday Night Live cold open: Alec Baldwin’s Donald Trump talks gun control

Saturday Night Live cold open

This week’s Saturday Night Live cold open was understandably the subject of a whole lot of speculation in advance. For example, would Alec Baldwin’s recent comments about his Donald Trump impression, and Trump firing back on Twitter, inform what actually happened? Did something else take place instead?

Well, not so much. Instead, Baldwin chose to bring back Trump to open up about gun control, mocking the recent bipartisan panel where Trump said a number of surprising things. In the SNL version Trump not only went in and took on school shooters unarmed, he also went over to North Korea and take on Kim Jong-un. He also talked a little bit about Hope Hicks (in a very perverted way) and how Jared Kushner would be in prison pretty soon.

The best line, by far, was Trump saying that the White House was like a business — a Waffle House at 2:00 in the morning. The best cameo come courtesy of Jeff Sessions, who have become a surprising figure within the White House given some of the recent disdain Trump has shown for him. With that, Kate McKinnon has turned this character from more of a Trump surrogate into a Trump agitator.

Was any of this funny? There were some funny moments here and there, including Trump thinking that Wakanda was an actual place. Yet, you can argue still that it was too soon to make a comedic spoof on a gun control debate. The audience struggled to warm up to it at first, and it was only after the show started to pivot away slightly from taking on the subject of what happened in Florida that they started to come around.

Ultimately, comedy is art and with that, it’s all up to subjectivity. The biggest issue with the Baldwin – Trump cold opens at this point is just that they’re tired. There’s nothing altogether new about them.
