Vikings season 5 spoilers: Katheryn Winnick on what’s next for Lagertha
This is a character that was going through a great deal of pain and suffering when we last saw her during the mid-season finale. She suffered a tremendous loss with the death of Astrid. How is she going to recover from that? That’s one of the biggest discussion points leading into the second half of season 5, premiering later this year on History.
Speaking in a new interview with TV Guide, the actress had the following to say when it comes to her character’s current emotional state:
“She’s a changed woman now … Lagertha is definitely a different person at the end of [the midseason finale]. After everything she went through, it’s a huge shock for her and physically, she will never be the same, as well as mentally and spiritually.”
As for whether or not CarterMatt expects Lagertha to emerge from the other side of this quagmire in one piece, it’s going to be difficult. As a matter of fact, it’s almost certain that her life is never going to be the same. How can it? It’s not just about losing somebody that she cared about (that has also happened when she lost Ragnar), but she also happened to lose this last battle against Ivar and his troops are moving in to take over Kattegat.
Moving into the second half of the season, we are getting into a period great uncertainty for this character. While we know that she is a strong, capable leader and will do whatever she needs to do in order to get the job done, that does not mean that she is incapable of failure. She’s had that, and to go along with that there is also the fear of the prophecy of one of Ragnar’s sons eventually being her demise. That is still lingering out there, scaring fans half to death of losing one of television’s strongest female characters.
Do we know that Winnick is directing an episode in season 6? Absolutely, but that does not mean that the character survives until then. We just want her to survive, especially since she is really the last big female lead left standing on this show at the moment.
