The Magicians season 3 episode 9 preview: The musical episode

The Magicians season 3 episode 9 is an episode that we appreciate just in terms of its ambition. We know that this is a show that loves to think outside of the box, but still — who doesn’t love the idea of the series going all-out for something like a musical episode? It’s bold, ambitious, and absolutely a risk that we’re thrilled they are deciding to take. This could be funny, it’s certainly going to be visually stunning, and in some way it makes sense for this show.

As for how this will compare to some other musical episodes over time, we compare it mostly to The Flash / Supergirl musical in that there are numbers, but it’s not as though every single character will be belting out a song every single second of it. There is still a story to follow and some other important goals that the series is going to be trying to achieve.

What we’re the most interested in at the moment is just how this episode could be received after the fact. There is this tendency out there, after all, for musical episodes to be incredibly polarizing. There are many people out there who love them; yet, there are also people who cannot stand them and hate when major networks go in this direction. We’ve come to learn over time that there really is not a whole lot of middle ground one way or another when it comes to this. The challenge for the writers is to win over many of the people out there who remain firmly on the fence.
