Chicago Med season 3 episode 10 review: The truth behind Barry Vaughn

Chicago Med season 3

Who is Barry Vaughn? On Chicago Med season 3 episode 10 Tuesday night, there were many interesting questions that were raised — nonetheless, the status of Maggie’s boyfriend was one of the most interesting. He worked so hard to get himself back into her life, only for another issue to arise after an incident in which he was forced to use his gun — because of a name change, his concealed-carry permit was not entirely legal. Barry Vaughn wasn’t actually his real name, and he had some demons from his childhood that he had chosen to keep everyone.

Out of all of the possible endings on Tuesday night’s new episode, we do have to say that one of the last outcomes we expected within this episode was to see Barry end up in handcuffs. Maggie, after taking such a risk on this man, ends up being devastated once more and it is incredibly depressing.

As for everyone else in this episode, there were some other surprises — just unexpected ones, like Connor Rhodes sleeping with a married woman after a charity function without knowing of her relationship status. (This woman ended up being his patient, which caused some rather awkward interactions over time.) Meanwhile, Dr. Reese found so much progress within the therapy that was done to help her issues that she was desperate to use it on others, really without any sort of regard for whether or not it was the right thing for her to do. (It ended up working, but her defiance against Dr. Charles’ orders ultimately infuriated him.)

Meanwhile, there were also some really wonderful moments within this episode for Dr. Will Halstead as he showed that he, once more, can be the hero of the hospital we want him to be. After Natalie started showing serious concussion systems, he decided that he was going to help their patient, a sheltered, manipulated 14-year old who was married to a Reverend at least three or four times her age. This was some horribly messed up medieval garbage that he was doing to her, and to go along with that, he was determined to use her for reproduction without her cancer being treated. Will tricked the Reverend and figured out a way in which to help this young girl get the help that she actually needed.

CarterMatt Verdict

Chicago Med season 3 episode 10 showed us that Maggie just can’t catch a break and beyond that, it reminded us of why we love this show so much. This was an episode about heartbreak, pain, and also still hope that doctors will find some good in the world. It also gave us the feeling once more that the show is seemingly setting up something with Dr. Rhodes and Dr. Bekker — it’s just a slow burn for the time being.
