Animal Kingdom season 3 spoilers: Denis Leary signs on for recurring role

Denis Leary

While Animal Kingdom season 3 could very well end up losing Scott Speedman (who plays Baz on the series), it does appear as though they are gaining another big-name actors in Denis Leary.

TNT confirms that Leary is being brought on board the drama series for a significant role as Deran’s estranged father Billy, someone who was understandably sent away by Smurf many years ago. How this character returns remains to be seen, but as with most things Animal Kingdom we imagine that there are going to be some problems that come along as a result of his arrival. If there wasn’t, we would wonder if this is even the same sort of show we’ve remembered through two seasons.

In a statement confirming the news, the network’s executive vice president of scripted programming Sarah Aubrey had the following to say:

“Denis Leary’s extensive and successful career playing complicated, flawed characters makes him the perfect addition to this badass Animal Kingdom family.”

Animal Kingdom season 3 is going to air on TNT at some point in the summer. As for Speedman, his recent Grey’s Anatomy casting is what is causing some to strongly believe that the actor could be departing this show and heading over to the ABC medical drama full-time in the future. Baz’s fate was left in question at the end of season 2, but the recent season 3 trailer suggested that you are at least going to see the character in some capacity.

Hopefully, this is the sort of casting that helps to invigorate Animal Kingdom as a series even more and gets plenty of people talking. The biggest thing that this season of the show needs more than anything else is to continue to keep some of the buzz going. It’s hard for a cable drama that isn’t often in awards conversation and doesn’t have the largest viewership under the sun.
