Outlander season 4 looking to cast large numbers of native actors

Watch the Outlander season 3 premiere

This morning’s latest Outlander season 4 casting news comes not so much in terms of any one character that has been cast; rather, it marks the series looking for a large number of important people for an upcoming scene airing later this spring.

To be specific, signs point towards Outlander looking to cast First Nations actors in Canada in order to potentially play members of tribal communities in some upcoming episodes. There are two different casting calls being held by the Lisa Parasyn Casting agency (based out of Toronto) in northern Ontario cities like North Bay and Sudbury (take a look at the flyer below for some additional details), where the show is looking for a number of native men, women, and children to film upcoming episodes in May and June. This guarantees that production on the fourth season will continue until June, which should not be much of a surprise given that this is how long it ran back for season 3 in South Africa. Unless things are being shot out of order, this likely means that some of the sequences with these performers will be either the finale or the episode before it.

As for looking in Canada to find background characters for the show’s version of North Carolina, it actually makes a great deal of sense. The relationship between Canada and Great Britain also likely makes compensation for the work easier than it would be bringing in Native American performers stateside. We also just think that First Nations people in this part of Canada could enjoy this opportunity — these are parts of Canada that don’t often get a lot of attention or media exposure, which is a shame since their natural beauty is in many ways unparalleled. They’d actually make great filming locations for other series depending on when production is done. (This time of year, it would be difficult.)

In looking at the story of Outlander itself, we can’t quite say that it’s all too much of a surprise that the series is looking to bring in some scenes with tribe members given that we’ve got a story set in the 18th century. The relationship between settlers and tribal communities in that era is pretty well-documented — what isn’t, at least so far in the show, is what the relationship will be between some of these people and Jamie and Claire.
