The Resident episode 5 review: Dr. Bell passes the buck

The Resident episode 5

While there were a number of different things that The Resident episode 5 hoped to execute, perhaps the biggest one was simply this: The difficult relationship between saving lives and improving your career. There are two types of doctors: Those who want to operate solely to help others and those who are desperate to do for the glory.

Tonight, we saw somewhat what transpires when glory gets out of control. There were three operations going on concurrently, and what we ended up seeing in the process was the entire hospital staff getting together. All of a sudden, Dr. Bell’s hopes of recognition were dashed because every single patient’s life was on the line. The doctors were ultimately left to scramble every which way.

Were they able to successfully scramble? Unfortunately, not so much, and with that the doctors were forced to present some bad news. There were mistakes, and there were problems. It all ultimately fell on Dr. Bell, who felt the need to schedule some of these surgeries concurrently.

In the aftermath of what happened tonight, we saw basically a situation of Dr. Bell trying to throw others under the bus. He refused to take responsibility for some of his decisions; instead, he passed the blame over onto Dr. Okafor, saying that she was “just not ready” for the new burden that was put upon her.

Within this moment, we do think that Devon started to turn and realize, perhaps more than ever, that Dr. Bell is not the man he wants to be like. There are right and wrong ways to take responsibilities for past actions. In this case, we’re pretty darn confident that this was wrong. As if Bell throwing Dr. Okafor under the bus was not bad enough, there was also him intentionally laying an apology to a family member on thick simply for the sake of ensuring that there was a smaller lawsuit down the line.

Beyond the main medical crisis tonight, what we also ended up seeing tonight was Nic getting closer to figuring out the secret to Dr. Lane — so much so that Lane requested to take her off all her patients. If Nic wants to get some additional answers, she’s going to have to find a different way to do so.

CarterMatt Verdict

The Resident episode 5 was dramatic, but we would argue that it took a little bit of time in order to get going. We’re not sure how much we learned tonight other than that Dr. Bell remains terrible, and that Nic may be getting a possible new love interest that excels in the field of making Conrad jealous. Meanwhile, Dr. Okafor is going to need to figure out some better ways to unwind.
