Gotham season 4 episode 12 sneak peek: Alfred’s out on the streets

When Gotham season 4 episode 12 airs on Fox, you’re going to see presumably a different side of Alfred than ever before. After serving as Bruce Wayne’s butler and mentor throughout the series to date, a hard-partying Bruce has kicked him to the curb.

With that, come Thursday night’s episode Alfred is going to be out in Gotham proper, reminding everyone once more than he knows how to protect himself. The sneak peek below features the character getting into it with some muggers on the street before Jim Gordon arrives with plenty of questions. He’s not entirely clued in on why Alfred isn’t with Bruce or at Wayne Manor, so they have some significant catching up to do. It’s probably with this in mind that Jim realizes that Bruce may be going off the rails a bit — while Alfred may be a dominating influence at times he cares for Bruce more than anyone else. Alfred being sent away is hardly good for his future.

While we’re of course hoping for a reunion between Bruce and his butler sooner rather than later, we will also admit that there could be some rather-good things that come courtesy of getting the Alfred character out on the streets. This allows for a chance to see a more rough-around-the-edges take on the character than what we’ve seen to date and there is something very exciting that comes along with that. It’s a chance to develop more notes to this character and understand how some of his survival skills have served him well in life. While Alfred may be on hard times right now, this is not the sort of character we envision throwing in the towel and suddenly giving up because things are not currently working his way. There is a tremendous amount of depth here, so much more than what we’ve seen to date.

If nothing else, the next episode or two of Gotham could serve as a great portrait of Alfred the man before we potentially get a chance to see Alfred the butler resurface once more.
