The Voice season 14 Britton Buchanan audition introduces Block twist
In terms of quality, Britton is a fine singer and we have to think that this is in part why NBC chose him to highlight here. Yet, there’s also something more going on here — the use of the Block. This is a new twist introduced to the show this year, one that masically enables one of the coaches to be able to stop one of their competiors from getting a team member. Here, Blake Shelton decides that he’s clearly interested in keeping Adam Levine from getting Britton on his team.
Is this a good twist? Well, it’s weird because we don’t actually think that the Blind Auditions are the part of The Voice that really needed to be shaken up. Also, we feel kind of bad for the kid because it seems like he is a massive Maroon 5 fan who was absolutely going to choose Adam were it not for what happened. Blake tried to deny blocking him at first, but eventually he does own up to it and says that he did it mostly because he is that desperate to ensure that he gets Britton on his team.
If we were Britton, we’d almost go with Alicia Keys just for the humor of it all — also, Adam recommends to him that he go with Alicia since she’ll take good care of him. (Conspiracy theory — who thinks that it’s possible another coach lets Britton go later on this season so that Adam can steal him and eventually get him on his team? That’d be even funnier than Blake wasting his Block here.)
Basically, the Block just seems to exist for the coaches to troll each other — that’s funny, but we do think it’s probably unneeded. The part of The Voice that needs to really be addressed are the boring and drawn-out battle rounds in the middle. We’d rather seeing fewer contestants get through the blind auditions so that those could be cut and we could just go through the Knockouts and then have more live shows instead.

One thing we will say
How many more people do we need to see perform the song “Trouble”? It has to be one of the most over-done singing-show songs out there.
