Doctor Who season 11 reportedly going more for ‘family’ vibe

Doctor Who season 11 logoIf there is one word to describe Doctor Who season 11, who would’ve thought it would be “family”? This show is wonderfully imaginative, and to also go along with that is interesting, thought-provoking, and smart. It’s often abstract. while it is often meant for family audiences to enjoy, that sense of community is rarely ever echoed on the series itself. Sometimes you get friendship, but that is largely it in recent years.

With Chris Chibnall at the helm, though, it appears as though the goal is to shake things up. In speaking on this subject a little bit more to the Radio Times, a source close to the show had the following to say in terms of what is going to be coming — and how the early days of the series are being used as an inspiration:

“The first Doctor played by William Hartnell was a grandfather to Susan and he had the companions Ian and Barbara in these early adventures … Chris’s show will be very much its own thing but that is kind of the vibe.”

There seems to be a core cast of four on this upcoming season of Doctor Who and with these characters all traveling together, there may be a concentrated effort to see this group love and support each other in the way that a family would. Jodie Whittaker’s version of The Doctor will be at the center of it all, but Bradley Walsh’s Companion-of-sorts Graham could end up being a father figure to some of the other characters. He’s someone who has experienced and lived more as a human than anyone else.

We don’t think Doctor Who is going to change so much that it’s a different show altogether, but there seems to be a concentrated effort to design this as its own series with an identity that feels different and unique for this new era of the show. Hopefully, it does find a way to become a program that more families want to check out together, and that families can also take and apply to part of their everyday lives.
