Is Linda Bassett leaving Call the Midwife as Nurse Crane?

Is Linda Bassett leaving

Is Linda Bassett leaving Call the Midwifeand the role of Nurse Crane behind to go along with it? We know that this is the questions at the heart of the show right now, and for some simple reason: The fire.

In what is the second major television event of 2018 at the moment involving a fire (the first of course being what happened over on This Is Us), a preview for the next new episode of the BBC series features something pretty horrible happening to Nurse Crane in the midst of a blaze. As for what could have caused it, human error is the most likely possibility — as for whether Phyllis started it herself or someone else ended up screwing things up, this is one of the questions we’re left to wonder for the next little while. The same goes for whether or not she survives it.

If this was a show other than Call the Midwife, it’s possible that we would be a little bit more confident in Nurse Crane’s survival odds — yet, this is a series that already has made quite the habit over time of having characters depart through various means. Remember the exit of Jessica Raine a few years back, or how we’ve said goodbye to Emerald Fennell? The only thing that’s a little bit different here is that Jenny and Patsy weren’t killed off — they simply went away for a while. We do have another character departing for the time being in Helen George, but she is going to be back a little bit later. (She’s currently on maternity leave.)

There are a few more episodes to go this season, so let’s hope that Nurse Crane is around for all of them! The last thing that we want to see is some sort of further tragedy within Nonnatus House that causes everyone more pain. If something happens to Phyllis, it could end up being one of the most heartbreaking moments of the entire series to date.
