Family Guy spoilers: Stewie’s sexuality to be addressed

A little bit later on this season on Family Guy, it appears as though the Fox series is going to really address Stewie’s sexuality in a way that is far more explicit than they have to date. Through much of the series’ run the show has made a few nods to the subject, including some various asides and jokes when it comes to the character. Yet, they really haven’t spent longer than a few jokes at a time on the subject. That’s going to change:

Speaking per TVLine, executive producer Rich Appel had the following to say about an upcoming episode coming up next month, one that will feature Sir Ian McKellen playing the part of Stewie’s therapist:

“It’s just a two-character episode with Stewie in his therapist’s office for the first time … It’s a wonderful episode, and Seth’s performance is spectacular. They delve into all sorts of things you would think would come up in a therapy session with a boy like Stewie. When Stewie’s with his therapist, they pretty immediately address questions of sexuality. The episode covers that, and then goes to deeper issues for Stewie.”

If “deeper issues” means that we’re going to dive into some more interesting character work for Stewie, we’re all about it. Really, any episode of Family Guy that can break from some of the conventions and do something new is appreciated. This is why some of the episodes that featured Brian’s death are in retrospect so fascinating — they were maddening at the time since they made us all think that we’d lost this character for good. Yet, that in itself was the show really testing something in the devotion that all of us had to some of the characters. If a silly, animated television show can actually make you feel something real and fairly genuine about some of its characters, you know you are going somewhere. Family Guy is always better with more hurt, though we more than understand the legion of people out there who don’t want to see it move itself towards sappy territory by any means.
