Outlander perspectives: Who was your favorite season 3 villain?
We were mostly curious about this particular question because of how the audience would respond — would it be based solely on nostalgia, or would it be instead be based on what actually happened during the story? Given that Black Jack Randall (as played by Tobias Menzies) was the winner of Best Villain in the CarterMatt Awards this past year, it was easy to assume that he would walk away with this.
Yet, there was a different result at the end of the day with this poll — Geillis Duncan! The villain, as played by Lotte Verbeek, received the vast majority of the votes. This feels like a great result for season 3 — while there was not one consistent villain throughout, Geillis was the largest overall threat to Jamie and Claire’s future at the end of the episode. She was the only other known person besides Claire capable of traveling through time. However, she chose to use it differently than Claire, and wanted to further her own agenda and come up with new ways to acquire power and influence. She was bold, intimidating, and she had her eyes set on Brianna at the end of the season.
It’s not just Geillis herself that makes this character so important to the overall season 3 story — it’s also how she died. Claire chopping off her head via axe has to be considered one of the most dramatic character deaths that we’ve seen in recent TV memory, not just with this particular season in mind. It showed what Claire will do to protect those she cared about, even if it was just a spur-of-the-moment decision. The way that Geillis’ death also found itself tied to everything with Joe Abernathy earlier on in the season as fantastic in its own right.
