Absentia season 2 spotlight: The fascinating future of Alice Durand

Alice Durand

As we look ahead towards a possible Absentia season 2, the plan is to continue showing off spotlight articles about many of the series’ characters and what could be coming up next for them.

CarterMatt already has an article online about the possible future for Stana Katic’s Emily Byrne; today, the focus is being shifted a little more over to Alice Durand, one of the most surprising and engaging characters on the show. It would’ve been so easy for the writers and producers to just pit Alice and Emily against each other and have that be it; however, this story was so much richer than that. While Emily may have been the heroine of this story (flawed as she may be), Alice was justified in doing most of what she did. She was just trying to protect Flynn and had a right to be afraid, both for her relationship and eventually her life, with someone returning to her husband’s world who had so much mystery around them. That only escalated and spiraled by the end of the season.

Yet, by the season’s end Alice seemed to be in a better place with Nick, Flynn, and even Emily as some of the mystery was sorted out. Everyone found a way to coexist … at least for now.

So where could Alice actually factor in moving into a second season? It’s an interesting question, because it wouldn’t feel right to just continue some sort of love-triangle story; that feels a little bit too easy. Instead, it would be a little more interesting to see another case that Alice finds herself roped into. Maybe someone from her past is involved in a murder this time around or she finds herself in a position where she has to commit a criminal act to protect Flynn. It would be interesting to see her and Emily in a situation where they would actually need to work together for a longer period of time.

Beyond just that, it would also be interesting to learn a little bit more about who Alice is as a person beyond just being a wife and a mother — she has a sister who we’ve met, but what is her own day to day life like? Are there some surprising things about her that aren’t altogether known just yet? We know that Alice and Nick are expecting a child of their own and gives them even more to fight for at home — you just have to hope that they don’t feel the sort of danger again that they did in season 1. (Then again, who are we kidding? This is Absentia, a series that is all about danger.)

Ultimately, the ideal for Alice is mostly that the writers just construct a way to use her that makes sense for the series, but is also somewhat different than what we saw during the first season. Also, it gives Cara Theobold even more great material to work with.
