TV Lifespans: Beyond Supernatural season 13, how much more life is there?

Is Supernatural season 13 anywhere close to the end of the road for the CW series? There’s certainly a lot to dive into here in this latest edition of our TV Lifespans series.

For starters, let’s take a close look at where we are at present. Supernatural remains an institution on the network, and its ratings are just as solid as ever. As a matter of fact, the show’s performance is almost remarkable. To date, the series is only down 1.5% in the 18-49 demographic versus season 12 — the majority of network shows are down more than 10% versus their prior year, so this really is something that show fans can celebrate. In total viewers, Supernatural season 13 is actually up 7% on average versus season 12.

Why is Supernatural doing so well even while other CW series fall? A big part of that is to the credit of Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins for continuing to deliver great performances as Sam, Dean, and Castiel. Another part of it goes to the writers for continuing to come up with ideas that push the envelope of what this show is. There is an element of comfort food to Supernatural in that it is somewhat procedural and you know in many cases what you can expect to see almost every week. However, it does just enough to make the show feel new and keep you guessing.

If the show ever ends, it’s likely not going to be due to the ratings; instead, we imagine that this will be tied a little bit more to however long the cast still wants to be a part of it. This is something that CW programming heard Mark Pedowitz previously confirmed. In Jensen or Jared was uninterested in continuing to do Supernatural, odds are the announcement would’ve come out by now this season. All signs point towards a season 14 renewal.

Beyond that, it’s probably too early to say. This feels like the sort of thing now where everyone just takes things year by year and allows the decisions to be made as time goes along. There’s really no reason for anybody to rush things along. Personally, season 15 seems like a good target to reach for now just because that’s such a milestone number; getting to season 20 would be remarkable, but at a certain point we’re just getting greedy.
