Grey’s Anatomy actress Jeanine Mason joins Roswell reboot
Is Jeanine Mason leaving Grey’s Anatomy so soon after joining the series as Sam? Some current indications seem to suggest so.
According to a report that is coming in right now via Deadline, Mason has officially signed on to star in the upcoming Roswell reboot on The CW, one that is coming from Carina Adly MacKenzie and is being directed in the pilot phase by Julie Plec. (Both parties previously worked together on The Originals.)
Here is what the current logline for Mason’s character, and the entire series, is at present:
“Reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, Liz Ortecho (Mason), a jaded biomedical researcher and the daughter of undocumented immigrants, is haunted by a tragic incident. She discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: He’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.”
As for what this means in terms of the Mason’s future on Grey’s Anatomy, it’s pretty simple: If this new series is picked up, there’s a pretty good chance that you are not going to be seeing any more appearances from her as Sam. It’s a similar situation to what Jerrika Hinton was in near the end of season 12, where it appeared as though she was leaving after she was cast in another pilot. Yet, when that series wasn’t picked up she ended up returning to ABC for another season. She did, however, leave at the end of season 13 to join HBO’s drama Here and Now. We certainly understand why Mason (who is a former winner of So You Think You Can Dance) would make this decision. Being a lead comes with far greater stability than just coming on board Grey’s Anatomy as one of the interns.
