Outlander perspectives results: Viewers wanted more of Helwater

What did Outlander viewers want more of through their watching experience of season 3? That’s a question that we raised during our ongoing Outlander perspectives article series and we were definitely pleased with the feedback!

While there have been some poll results that have been runaways on CarterMatt as of late, this one was fairly close — what this means to us is twofold. For starters, it means that viewers enjoyed a lot of the season and, therefore, there are differing opinions on which facet they wanted to see more of. Beyond that, this also makes it fairly clear that there was no clear part of the season that production really bungled on, at least in the sense that they didn’t show nearly enough of it.

As the title indicates, it is the Helwater sequence that most of our readers (or at least 36%, enough to win the most-recent poll) were interested in getting more of this past fall. We understand why that didn’t happen — this was a very specific point in Jamie Fraser’s life, and until the very end of it when he leaves the estate there’s not too much in here that directly furthers him towards a reunion with Claire. The entirety of this storyline was put into the chapter “Of Lost Things,” an extraordinary hour that really captured what life was like for Sam Heughan’s character as he tried to find his way; unfortunately, in the process he was also used in a rather terrible way by Geneva Dunsany, eventually leading to the birth of William.

We don’t necessarily think that Outlander needed to place more of the Helwater story into another episode, especially since having its own episode allowed for it to feel more like its own little movie. We could argue that the run time could have been extended another five or ten minutes in order for this particular story to have more depth. Explore more of Jamie’s time with William or even what some of the immediate aftermath was to Geneva’s death.

Hopefully, in one way or another the story of William and the end results of Helwater will become important throughout season 4.
