This Is Us season 3 will explore more of Miguel – Rebecca relationship

If there is one way to describe Miguel on This Is Us, it’s this: He’s a good guy in a not-great situation. No matter what he does, there are always going to be viewers of the show that proclaim that he can’t measure up to Jack. He has to be aware of that, and luckily, we do think that he is. Unfortunately, that awareness doesn’t necessarily mean that other characters — or viewers — are going to be altogether willing to accept him. We do think that the scenes earlier this season are a step in the right direction, but it may not be until season 3 when things really start to open up more.

In speaking to TV Guide in a new interview, Jon Huertas made it clear that there is going to be more exploration into both Miguel’s relationship with Rebecca and with her kids. Unfortunately, you’re not going to see all of it this season:

“This season we’ve got some cool stuff coming up. In the next season, we really open it up … There are still some people that still need some convincing.”

Kate is going to be an interesting one. Like with Kevin she probably has a hard time imagining her mother with anyone else, especially her late father’s best friend. It’s probably made even harder for her due to how Jack died. She likely feels that were it not for her choices in one particular moment, Jack would still be alive and she would be able to spend time with him. The Miguel situation is complicated because of so many circumstances, and all Miguel really did was choose to love someone who had an interest in loving him back.

While we don’t quite think that This Is Us is going to be becoming the Miguel show in the near future — and nor should it — there are some opportunities coming up in order to discuss a little bit further his backstory and the relationship he has with Rebecca. An episode or two on that would be far from a bad thing.
