Star Trek: Discovery season 2: Could we have more Christopher Pike?
Out of everything that we expected to see over the course of the series, we weren’t sure that the USS Enterprise was one of them — especially with Christopher Pike. James T. Kirk’s predecessor from the original series. After wondering about this show’s connections to the original Trek and where it fits into the larger universe, we’ve now got a small hint of that.
Based on what we’re now seeing, there are many good opportunities coming up to explore this canon and the world further. Speaking in a postmortem on the finale to TVLine, executive producer Aaron Harberts has the following to say:
“I think one of the biggest things [that this twist] going to allow us to do is start to develop how Discovery fits into canon. One of the big things that’s been polarizing for fans is, “We’ve never heard about Discovery! How does it fit? She’s related to Spock?” All those things. And what it’ll allow us to do is hit that straight-on. We see it as an exciting opportunity to say, “This is exactly how Discovery fits into the timeline. This is exactly how we can reconcile the choices we have made.” Because at this period in time, the Discovery and the Enterprise are the crown jewels in the fleet, so they should be face-to-face.”
Hopefully, this twist is a way to connect one show with another without also trying to ret-con anything from the original series. This would be our one large concern here: Coming up with convenient reasons why Discovery wasn’t mentioned or other plot threads that try too hard to justify the new show’s existence. Have some fun with the ships colliding, offer up some perspective, and then move on to whatever is next. We don’t expect the Enterprise to be around for the rest of the season. Even if it’s just a part of the story for a week or two, we do still consider it to be a nice slice of fan service and absolutely something we welcome.
As for the future of Christopher Pike, we do hope this character has a role of sorts to play given that there’s a little more room to explore here than there would be a Kirk.
