Will Grey’s Anatomy get two-season renewal later this spring?
For starters, we know already that series star Ellen Pompeo is locked in to do two more years of the show. She recently signed a rather massive contract that will keep her as a part of the series, and we imagine that locking her in was the first order of business. Beyond that, the next one is figuring out a way to get some other cast members signed — we feel like once another two people in the core cast are inked, we could see ABC making a renewal official.
So why go for two seasons? Is there any real merit to that? With a semi-procedural show like this, not superficially. It’s not as though Grey’s Anatomy needs to order a two-season renewal in order to satisfy anyone given that they could always just order another batch of episodes next year. The big reason to do it is mostly as a vote of confidence — one that could be needed right now. With Shonda Rhimes’ new deal over at Netflix, signing Grey’s Anatomy to two more seasons could be a way for ABC to make everyone feel a little bit more comfortable that the show isn’t going anywhere. It also means that there could be a better chance for stability when it comes to Station 19, the upcoming spin-off series. While the renewal of one show doesn’t necessarily impact the other, we do think having more Grey’s Anatomy would give viewers another reason to watch the spin-off — the two could coexist on the same network for many years to come!

No matter how many seasons ABC renews for Grey’s Anatomy, we do think that we’ll get a chance to hear a little bit more news on the series at some point over the next month or so. We’d be shocked if ABC waited all the way to May sweeps in order to announce something here.
