Outlander season 4 character questions: All about Sam Heughan’s Jamie Fraser

Jamie Fraser

We’re starting to get near the end of our Outlander season 4 character questions article series, but today we’re certainly hoping to near the conclusion on a high note with none other than Jamie Fraser as the focus! Sam Heughan’s character is essential to the series and is a major component to its heartbeat — he’s adventurous, passionate, funny at times, and certainly romantic at others. He’s a real entry point in many ways to the 18th century and Scottish culture within the show.

Moving into season 4, it’s fair to say that Jamie is in a very different place than he has ever been in before — he’s now in America, he’s thousands of miles away from his home, and while there are still some similarities thanks to both the era and the oppression by the British, there are also clear differences. We’re embarking on a very new chapter for Jamie, and with that we’ve also got almost a clean slate for stories for Heughan to play as this character.

Below, as we’ve been keen to do in all of our character questions articles, we’ve got a list of where we’d like to see Jamie’s story go from here. Note that there are no book spoilers within — we’re strictly speaking through the lens of the series and what we’ve seen on it.

A stranger in a strange land – For most of Outlander, we’ve seen Jamie be a guide for Claire through the 18th century as she explores his world and the people who are in it. In America, however, we’ve got a little bit of a different experience. While Jamie may have some family in the area, it’s a completely separate place with distinct cultures and traditions. We’d love to see him stumble a little bit more with acclimation where he isn’t quite as comfortable; he and Claire in some ways are now on a level playing field, given that she can inform him about American traditions and history even if she does not know any of the people who are around.

More of Jamie the father – We know that Brianna coming back to the past is on the Outlander wishlist for many people out there and we are certainly eager to see what that looks like. We’ve gotten to see a small slice of Jamie the dad with William, but bringing in Brianna allows that to accelerate on another level.

The comfort of a routine with Claire – While Jamie and Claire love their adventure, this season offers up an opportunity for the two to actually remain stationary in a way that we have not seen them really ever. We want to see what that sort of lifestyle does to the Jamie – Claire relationship. Does it make them stronger to find a little bit of normalcy, or will they ever really have that?

Jamie’s search for a role – We’d like to see the character do a little bit of soul-searching now when it comes to what sort of professional role he wants to take in America. With Claire, her path seems a little more clear given her training. For Jamie, though, he has such a wide array of different skills that he may need to spend some time pondering over this. It’s also relatable in how many people still struggle with this in life.

Of course, more action – While we do want to see Jamie continue to evolve, a big part of the appeal of him is that he has this roguish charm and propensity to get himself into trouble. We certainly don’t want to lose that.
