Lauren Cohan still discussing The Walking Dead season 9 return

Maggie

It may be a little premature, at least for now, to press the panic button when it comes to Lauren Cohan and her future as Maggie on The Walking Dead.

Earlier this year, it was reported all over that the actress was taking meetings and considering other options during pilot season. There’s no reason to walk any of that back — any actor whose contract is expiring should consider other venues and what’s out there if they have an itch that they want to scratch. None of this means that a departure from The Walking Dead is official.

The latest report from TVLine is further proof of that. The site notes that Cohan is still in discussions with the AMC series about extending her contract for season 9 and, to date, she has not indicated anything in terms of her plans to leave. Consider all of this, at least for now, Cohan keeping her options open. It does make a certain degree of sense that she would want to do that. For now, though, we anticipate her sticking around on The Walking Dead for a little while longer — it helps to cement the legacy of this show, for starters, but beyond that it will offer Cohan even more financial security to do other things. Joining a new show at this point probably won’t give her the same sort of salary that The Walking Dead could — like with many of the other actors, she can supplement this with appearances at conventions, if she chooses.

(Of course, we’re assuming with this report that Cohan would be receiving for season 9 what she’s deserved, which is a substantial pay increase given that she is one of the most-important characters on the series.)

The Walking Dead will return with the second part of season 8 on February 25.
