Lauren Cohan’s future on The Walking Dead seemingly in doubt

Lauren Cohan leaving

Is Lauren Cohan leaving The Walking Dead and her role as Maggie behind? There are questions surfacing that have CarterMatt wondering if we may be coming up on the end of Maggie on the show.

According to a new report from Deadline, the status of Cohan moving forward with the AMC zombie drama doesn’t seem to have much to do with whether or not her character has been killed off. Instead, it’s tied more to contractual negotiations looking forward to the ninth season. Cohan is reportedly seeking more money to return; the site notes that she has desired parity with her co-stars Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus, but has not made that a hard-and-fast requirement for her to come back. AMC did come back to her with a small pay increase, but that was rejected. Since that time, negotiations have broken down and AMC has not given her a new offer.

Cohan is now circling a number of different TV pilots, and word is that she’s one of the hottest commodities entering this upcoming season. That does make some sense, given her status on one of TV’s most-popular shows and her ability to play a lot of different genres and characters. We do wonder whether or not a new series would be attractive to her really regardless of salary; typically, The Walking Dead only allots you so much time given that it’s such an enormous cast. On a major network she could lead the show and be at the forefront of almost every episode.

This is an interesting situation to watch; if Cohan does leave, we would want to see a situation in which Maggie’s story is tied together properly; beyond that, we do wonder if the sentiment and feeling the cast has towards the show has changed in the aftermath of Carl being killed off. Chandler Riggs was one of the most-popular cast members and was considered, by many, to be the heart and soul of the show. We know the decision to remove Carl wasn’t a popular one with many fans, but we also get the sense that not everyone in the cast was altogether thrilled, either.
