The ideal Luther season 5 premiere date — when is it?

With Luther season 5 in production as of late, CarterMatt is eager to speculate as to when we could see Idris Elba’s title character on television.

Unfortunately, for the time being there is no official word. The BBC is an organization that often does like to keep its viewers waiting until the very last minute and we feel, almost certainly, like that is going to be precisely what transpires here.

Now that we’ve said that, when could we see the series coming back on the air? There are a number of different windows for the series, but if we were to think solely in terms of the ideal start times it would almost certainly be this: December 2018. Think about it in this sense — this is a chilly, dark series in so many ways, and its palette and tone seem to pair extremely well with late in the year. While we know that it’s not exactly a festive series for the holiday season, there are so many other venues out there that you can go to in order to enjoy Christmas. With this show we know precisely what we’re getting and we embrace some of that darkness.

One of the other main reasons why a December Luther season 5 premiere date makes sense is that both in terms of American and British television, there often is less competition out there on the air. We want this series to perform as well as it possibly can! We do recognize that there is no immediate cause for concern with the show’s performance and the future of Luther is really just up to Idris Elba and Neil Cross — we’re just greedy and we like to see the show generate some big numbers. That just serves as another form of validation and yet another reminder as to the series’ strengths.

To be fair, even if we do see Luther season 5 deliver some massive ratings we don’t think that this would hurry things along when it comes to a season 6. This show is almost following the same model as Sherlock at this point — not that we mind since that means we continue to get more episodes.
