TV Revivals: Is there any life left to TNT’s The Closer?

The Closer

We’ll admit that for most of the fall, we had TNT’s Major Crimes on the list of shows we were eager to do a TV Revivals piece on in January, and for good reason. After all, that was a show that was unceremoniously canceled by the network this past fall and we don’t think that it was merited in the slightest.

Then, the series killed off Mary McDonnell in the final episodes. We understood the merit at the time of the show wanting to end on its own terms and didn’t want the network to dictate just how it was going to conclude its story, but at the same time we do feel as though this move was misguided in the sense that fan passion wasn’t taken into enough account. While deaths happen in real life to people who don’t deserve it, there’s a certain amount of fantasy that exists, even in the hard-nosed world of crime procedurals. Viewers want to watch them to get away from the cruelty of reality.

With Sharon Raydor gone it’s hard to bring back Major Crimes … so why not go back to the beginning and consider The Closer? The TNT crime drama is, in our money, right up there with Monk as one of the most formative cable dramas of all time, one that really helped to catapult an entire genre of television to an echelon that it was not at beforehand. There was a great cast led by Kyra Sedgwick and plenty of great drama to go along with that.

Is there a way to get Brenda back into the picture with many of her former colleagues who went on to work with Sharon? While it would take some story creativity, we certainly think that it could happen. Even if it was just for a ten-episode revival where the entirety of it was all about one case, it could be fun to explore where many of these characters are. You can take the best of both The Closer and Major Crimes, only to throw them into the same basket.

Could it happen?

With Ten Days in the Valley done you can argue that Sedgwick may be a little more available, but that doesn’t mean that she would be interested in stepping back into these shoes. More than that, it seems like TNT is ready to move on and that makes it harder for the show to find a home elsewhere. TNT is the only network that The Closer and Major Crimes ever knew and, for whatever reason, the Kevin Reilly regime isn’t interested in these crime dramas.

For now, more of The Closer is a pipe dream, but it is admittedly a fun thing to think about.
