This Is Us Super Bowl episode has little ratings carryover

This Is Us Super Bowl

And the Super Bowl episode trend continues.

For many years, we know that major networks wanted to use the timeslot after the big game in order to get some sort of boost for a show — it was an opportunity to try to build a long-term following and take advantage of a lot of available viewers who want something to watch after the big game.

However, over time a rising trend that has come out of some of these broadcasts that has been fairly clear: Nobody really seems to care about watching episodes of these shows beyond the Super Bowl. The majority of the shows who have gotten this timeslot have seen huge lifts for one episode; however, that life translates into very little once the show returns to the normal timeslot. All of the new viewers who check out that episode tend to disappear into the wind, never to watch again (at least in terms of live viewing).

For the latest example of this, just look at the This Is Us season 2 ratings on NBC Tuesday night. This new installment of the show ended up generating overall a 2.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic and then also just over 10 million viewers — these are great numbers, but they are no different from what the This Is Us ratings were prior to the Super Bowl. There’s nothing about these ratings that stand out from the pack.

CarterMatt thinks that if This Is Us (one of the best shows out there) cannot build any further audience from a Super Bowl episode, networks should really consider a different strategy when it comes to airing shows after the big game. We’d do either one of two things — save the spot for a late-night comedy special so you can bring in lots of stars and have some viral moments, or figure out a way to launch an all-new show with no established audience just yet. At least with this you are setting yourself up for some success with a series that nobody knows as of yet.
