Chicago Med season 3 episode 9 review: Relationship cracks start to form
Take, for starters, the relationship between April and Ethan. They’ve managed to navigate their complicated professional work structure, but there was a snag when April was keen to help a young girl who was desperate to avoid being sent back to her old home — her mother’s boyfriend was abusive, and April refused to hand her over to an agency that was not going to help her. She allowed the girl to escape, and that caused a strain to form between the two parties. The one thing that April tried to remind Ethan of was this: What would he do if to help his own sister if she was in need?
Ethan threatened to write her up, but in the end he eventually learned to see things from her perspective — he even went with April to visit the girl and makes sure that she got a coat to stay warm.
As for Natalie and Will, we’re not sure that their issue is going to be so easy to rectify. They had a clear difference of opinion as to how to help young parents whose baby was born extremely prematurely: She wanted to help the two by any means necessarily. However, Will was nervous about fostering an environment of false hope. It was almost certain that there would be no way to save the baby and he was right. Yet, Natalie (likely because she is a mother) realized that any mother would want to do just about anything that they could in order to save their baby, even if the odds were not exactly in her favor. She allowed the parents to have a few minutes with their baby before they died.
Was this the right move? That’s certainly a point of controversy. These parents were grateful to have this time, but will every parent feel the same. There is a reason to worry that at some point in the future, the wrong parent will get wrong news and it will cause MASSIVE problems within the hospital.
Dr. Reese conquers her fears
This was a great storyline. One of the biggest reasons for that was simply due to the fact that she went into one of the most terrible places possible (the local prison) and was able to care for one of the prisoners there. She started one of the most dangerous men in Chicago in the face and actually did her part in order to help him. This was a great performance by Rachel DiPillo, who in general has done an outstanding job with her arc this season giving Sarah some depth.

CarterMatt Verdict
This was a very good episode of Chicago Med, and we enjoyed it even though we thought at first that the storyline with Malcolm McDowell as Dr. Jeffrey, a doctor who wanted to be awake during his operation, was a little far-fetched. The writers did find a way to make it work, though, mostly by showing that at Chicago Med, the doctors do rally together — when Dr. Jeffrey got to be too demanding, Connor found a way to get him under anesthetic so that he and Dr. Bekker (who seems to be more and more trusting of Connor these days) could finish the job.
