Ink Master season 10 episode 6 preview: DJ Tambe, Steve Tefft spar over Josh Payne
What we do find fairly interesting about the dynamic for the season at the moment is that it doesn’t feel all that much like we’re meant to like Team DJ right now — most of that may just be because Josh is being painted as the villain, but it’s rubbing off on some other people.
The truth of the matter here, though, is that Josh playing the common enemy is a great strategy. This is an effective way in which to ensure that he gets in everyone’s head and makes sure that someone else screws up. He doesn’t need to win tattoo of the day every week — he just needs to be better than at least one other person. If he does that for long enough, he wins. It’s really as simple as that. If Josh screws up a challenge at this point, his past resume could prove to be an asset to him.
Probably the thing that surprises us the most about this preview is seeing just how into the conflict some of the coaches are. We thought for a while that they would just feel comfortable and wouldn’t stress too much in this competition, feeling as though they were making it to the finale no matter what because of the twist. That’s not the case! Steve is hashing it out with Josh and it feels like this is going to continue the remainder of the season … or at least however long Josh is around. (We don’t foresee him going home at any point in the future.) There are a lot of great artists left — Josh is a favorite, but we also think that Jason Elliott is doing great work, Frank Ready has been pretty consistent, and Daniel Silva could be if he can get out of his own way a little bit with his ego.
This is a great season! We wish there was a little bit more time spent with the individual artists, but that’s just a minor CarterMatt complaint in a batch of episodes that has treated us really well.
