The Resident episode 4 review: The story of Kitty Hawk

The Resident episode 4

The Resident episode 4 reminded us within the first few minutes of some of the series’ central tenants. For starters, you always have to think in terms of the patient first and the rules of the hospital second. That’s some of the tough love we saw Conrad hand down. (Okay, maybe it wasn’t even “love” at all.) Beyond that, there is almost always a consequence for people acting in their own self-interest.

Last week, we learned that Dr. Hunter Lane had made it a habit of keeping her patient records off-site as a means of building up her own brand independent of the hospital. Nic has made it her goal now to figure out why she is doing this — is there a reason beyond what we’ve heard from her? Secret Agent Nic was on the case! There were some moments in here where we started to think that we were getting to see Emily VanCamp become Emily Thorne of Revenge again as she tried to figure out what was really going on here.

It didn’t really take too long before Hunter realized what was going on here — she confronted Nic about it, but at the same time there wasn’t a whole lot she could do, at least at present. We saw in the end of the episode when Nic tried to put out feelers about her clinic; unfortunately, she didn’t get all that much information other than that the chemotherapy doses are a little too high … dangerously so.

One of the other great stories in this episode came courtesy of Devon, who formed a bond with an elderly patient who wanted nothing more in order to ensure that she was married before undergoing an important surgery. The theme? Kitty Hawk, a place near and dear to her heart.

We had a feeling that we were going to lose this patient by the end of the hour but also felt like it was okay — luckily, that didn’t happen. After the fact, we ended up seeing Dr. Bell of course gloating that he was able to save her life.

For Conrad, meanwhile, he was desperate to ensure that a case of mistaken identity was turned around and that it never happened again. This led to an old ER nurse being re-hired so that the hospital could run a little bit more smoothly moving into the future. He still had to deliver some bad news, but at least he was able to do it in the right way and without any more institutional problems.

CarterMatt Verdict

The Resident does at times need to focus on further some stories, especially when it comes to the conflict between Dr. Bell and Conrad. We didn’t get anywhere near as much of that in this episode as we suspected that we would going into the hour.

Yet, at the same time we did really love getting a chance to see Devon’s emotional side in this episode, just as it was great to watch Nic do what she could to learn about what Dr. Lane was really up to.
