The state of McMafia ratings entering final episode

McMafia episode 2

What are the McMafia ratings as we approach the final episode of the BBC One drama? CarterMatt has taken a peak at the numbers, and while they’re not great, we have definitely seen so much worse.

Per a report from Telly Mix, Sunday night’s new episode of the James Norton drama ended up generating around 3.4 million viewers. That’s down about 100,000 viewers from the week before. Perhaps the bigger issue here though, is that McMafia is losing more than half of the viewership from Call the Midwife airing before it — you always want to retain viewers when you have a sweet lead in like this one. We do understand that the two are very different shows about very different subjects, but still: Retention is critical to long-term success.

Granted, McMafia may not be all that concerned about long-term given that this was conceptualized as a limited series. We’ll see where things wrap up in the finale, but our personal belief is this — regardless of whether or not a series is based on source material with a definite beginning, middle, and end, writers and producers will ALMOST ALWAYS ponder a way for more if there’s enough buzz about the show and especially if it leads to critical acclaim. The fact that we may be getting more of The Night Manager speaks to that, as does the fact that Big Little Lies season 2 is going to be filming.

Over the weekend, we presume that there will be some more opportunities to dive into the possibilities of more McMafia beyond this season — for now, though, consider the ratings, but also keep in mind that America is rolling out this series on AMC a little bit later this year. With enough international success and viewers watching after the fact, we do think that anything is still possible in regards to the series’ future. There are so many different components that go into the success of a show now a days and that’s what’s so exciting about this time in television history.
